Symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease is a challenging entity to treat. The result of arthrodesis may be compromised in the short term by pseudoarthrosis and in the long term by pain at the iliac crest donor site and by junctional degeneration. Total disc replacement has the potential to replace arthrodesis as the preferred surgical treatment of degenerative disc disease in some patients. In this JBJS /VJO video supplement to the article, Dr. Frank P. Cammisa, Jr., M.D., et al., discuss and present indications, contraindications, the importance of a trained surgical team and demonstrate the surgical technique of lumbar disc replacement utilizing a device developed in France by Thierry Marnay, M.D., and currently in use in selected European spine centers.
